Prague Main (Praha hlavní nádraží) Train Station
Prague Main (Praha hlavní nádraží) Railway Station Review
Prague Main train station is the biggest and busiest train station of Czech Republic. Most of the international and local trains coming to Prague arrive at this station. First opened in 1871, its modern building was finished in 1909 by the talented Joseph Fanta. Interesting fact, from 1945 to 1948 the station was called Willson Station in honor of the USA President Woodrow Wilson who supported the idea of Czech Republic's independence.

What to find on the station?
Prague has only one main station which is Praha Hlavni (main in Czech), that is often shortened as Praha hl.st. Being right in the city center and only 15 minutes walk from the Prague's Old Town and famous Kings Charles Bridge makes it a perfect choice for those who want not to waste time on the airport transfers and passport controls.
Most of the tourist enter the station through its new concourse, built in the 70's, passing by shops. Before entering the main hall you will ride on a travelator across few passageways, then under the tracks until you reach many stairs, escalators or elevators that will get you to the each of the platforms accordingly. The platforms at the train station are of so-called "island" type where every platform has two tracks on the each side. In case you have some free time make sure to check the historic art Noveau train station building built in 1909, which is left unnoticed most of the time as it is nested right above the modern station on the top of a small hill. The older building features amazing Coffee Day cafe opened from 8am to 11pm, making it a perfect place to wait before your train. Prague Main Train Station has only 8 platforms lined from the west to the east of the train station, and closer to the main entrance and city center of Prague. Railjet trains from Prague to Vienna are using these platforms. |
Interesting fact: the beautiful arched trainshed above the platforms #1 to 6 is the first arched construction of the kind in whole Europe. Please note that all the platforms are non-smoking and there are no kiosks or shops over there, so make sure to buy snacks and drinks before you jump on your train.
Ticket offices accept both Czech koruna and Euros, along with all the major credit cards. Moreover, you will find a large number of ATM's at the station. Praha Hlavni train station features great Czech Railways Lounge, which is located on the underground level, right below the main concourse and featuring free WiFi, water dispenser and kids corner, which seems to be downgrade from amazing German train station lounges. Unless you're waiting for your late train it is better to sit at Coffee Day Cafe instead. There are 2 luggage lockers options: the smaller one for regular sized luggage (located on the far left side of the station as you walk in) and another one that takes larger items, including bikes, on the far end of the station, from the right. Prices are following: about 3 Euro per smaller one for 24 hours, maximum allowed time is 72hrs. Opened daily from 03:30am until 00:30am. The large lockers cost 2.50 Euro for smaller items and 4 Euro per large item like a bike. Opened daily from 6am to 11pm. |
