Tour of Zurich Hauptbahnhof
The first train station in Zurich was opened in 1847 but the current building was built back in 1871. Nowadays main hall where people arrive and depart originally was a trainshed for the international trains until 1933. Now station features great shopping mall built underneath, as well as some underground platforms used by local Swiss trains.
The station is equipped with the great departure boards that show you the platform each train leaves from, make sure to check them in advance. Please note, that there are NO platforms #1 and 2 at Zurich Main train station for some years already. Platforms #3 to 18 located on the ground level of the main concourse and just next to the original 1871 main hall. Numbered from left to right, if you look from the main hall towards the platforms, those have easy access without any gates or barriers of any kind and are safe for people traveling with luggage or having any mobility issues. Most of the international trains like TGV from Paris, Railjets from Zurich to Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Budapest, sleepers to Berlin, high-speed trains to Zagreb and Budapest, and most of the local trains use these platforms. Platforms # 21 and 22 are only used by the local trains called SZU or Sihtal Zurich Uetliberg Bahn. |
Platforms #31-34 are located even lower, under the shopping mall level and mostly used for local Swiss routes to Bern, Lausanne & Geneva. Please note, that those train routes sometime use platforms #3 to 18, mentioned before.
Platforms #41 - 44 are used by Suburban S-Bahn trains only and not related to any of the international routes. There are plenty of luggage lockers on where you can leave your bags: located one level underground, it has easy access with the escalators going below right in the centre of the concourse. Free WiFi is available but for 60 minutes only. Also, you will be required to provide your cell phone number to receive the confirmation code to connect to SBB-FREE spot. Please note that the network might not work with your provider. There are no First Class Lounge zone at Zurich Hauptbahnhof train station since 2016. |
